Understanding and treating upper back pain

Before diving into solutions, it's essential to understand what causes upper back pain. Common culprits include:

Poor posture: Slouching or hunching for extended periods can strain the muscles and ligaments in your upper back.

Muscle overuse: Repetitive movements or lifting heavy objects without proper form can lead to muscle strain and pain.

Injuries: Accidents, falls, or sudden movements can result in upper back injuries.

Medical conditions: Conditions like herniated discs, osteoarthritis, and scoliosis can contribute to chronic upper back pain.

Here are some simple exercises we suggest to try at home that can help to alleviate the pain:

    Thoracic extension stretch:

Sit or stand with your back straight.

Interlace your fingers and place your hands behind your head.

Gently arch your upper back, lifting your chest towards the ceiling.

Hold for 10-15 seconds, and repeat 3-5 times.

    Shoulder blade squeeze:

Sit or stand with your back straight.

Squeeze your shoulder blades together, as if trying to hold a pencil between them.

Hold for 5-10 seconds and repeat 10-15 times.

    Cat-cow stretch:

Start on your hands and knees in a tabletop position.

Inhale as you arch your back (cow position), and exhale as you round it (cat position).

Repeat this flow 10-15 times to increase flexibility in your upper back.

    Chin tucks:

Sit or stand with your back straight.

Gently tuck your chin towards your chest.

Hold for 5-10 seconds and repeat 10-15 times to strengthen neck muscles.

While these exercises and treatments can provide relief, it is vital to consult a healthcare professional, such as one of our expert team here at Method Physiotherapy, if:
